my approach to the astrology of fiction

While assigning placements to fictional characters is a relatively common practice, I tend to take a more in depth approach that accounts for more than the archetypal influences on a particular character. I see astrology as another tool for storytelling and analysis and tend to create charts that describe a character’s experiences as much as their personality. Rather than starting with a chart and using it as an interpretive tool for real events, astrology for fictional characters offers a chance to put astrological storytelling to a different use by using the chart to tell a story that has already been written.

Utilizing the same techniques and principles I apply in natal consultations, I work to construct a chart entirely from scratch. I consider things like how the house and sign placement, essential dignities, and nature of various house rulers describes the experience of a character. The charts I make are possible (as in, Mercury and Venus will never be more than one or two signs from the sun respectively), but they are typically not “real” charts drawn from a specific moment in time. I will sometimes incorporate details from the show, from a stated sun sign to an entire canon birthday, and sometimes I’ll borrow Jupiter and Saturn signs from their actual positions during a given character’s birth year or root them relative to other characters. I’ll generally include specific process details like these in the posts I make.

Inspired by Nory and Veronicka, I also like to look at the chart of the actor that plays a particular character. Sometimes this will inform certain choices I make for the character, while other times it serves as an interesting point of comparison.

My opinions are, of course, just that. I welcome all debate and disagreement! If you think I got your favorite character wrong, tell me why. I see these charts as an exercise and a learning tool much more than as a definitive statement about a particular fictional character. By detailing my process, I want to invite people to think more deeply about these and other characters and deepen this astrological storytelling method.

I also want to give a shoutout to Alexis of the Astro Anecdotes podcast who invited me on my first in-depth, cohesive character astrology journey. I also want to highlight Serena, another brilliant astrologer doing this work (who has some fantastic takes on Schitt’s Creek).
